MONTEVIDEO — El secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, agradeció el miércoles a Uruguay su contribución a las misiones de paz de Naciones Unidas y se comprometió a resolver el atraso en los pagos al país, al término de una corta visita a la capital uruguaya.

“Los uruguayos han hecho grandes sacrificios en nombre del bien del mundo, han derramado su propia sangre en nombre de la paz mundial, 27 de los suyos han pagado el precio mas alto por causa de la paz, la seguridad y los derechos humanos”, dijo Ban durante un discurso ante la Asamblea General legislativa, al final de una visita de 24 horas.

(Reuters) – The U.N. human rights office said on Wednesday that Syrian security forces have repressed pro-democracy protests through executions, mass arrests and torture, citing widespread allegations it has received.

Entire towns have been besieged, including Deraa, preventing civilians from fleeing and depriving many of food supplies and access to medical care, especially the wounded, it said.

Drought in some areas and heavy rain in others are keeping world food prices near record levels, threatening the food supply for poorer, food-importing countries, the United Nations’ food body said Tuesday.

The Food and Agriculture Organization forecast in its biannual report that world cereal output would rise 3.5% to a record 2.3 billion metric tons in 2011—but warned that this might not be enough to replenish scarce world stocks and calm the recent turbulence in world food markets.

Human rights and anti-corruption concerns continue to lag behind environmental and labor issues as priorities at companies, but more are implementing anti-corruption mechanisms, according to a survey by the United Nations Global Compact.

Following a drop in the 2009 survey, the survey found that gains were made on anti-corruption at the 1,251 companies that responded for the 2010 edition (pdf) in the realm of explicit policies, or at least within overall corporate codes.  Corruption is but one category in the survey, which asks questions of the Global Compact’s four issue areas: human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

UNITED NATIONS — The last decade has seen a nearly 25 percent decline in new HIV infections, a reduction in AIDS-related deaths, and “unprecedented advances” in access to treatment, prevention services and care, the United Nations AIDS agency said in a report released Thursday night.

But UNAIDS said these achievements are unevenly distributed, exceedingly fragile, and fall short of global targets.
